MTRCB “SPG” Rating: What You Need To Know

The Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) has fully implemented the new “SPG” rating for television programs starting February 9, 2012 pursuant to Memorandum Circular No. 12-2011.

“SPG” stands for “Strong Parental Guidance” or “Striktong Patnubay at Gabay” in Filipino.

According to the MTRCB, programs classified “SPG” may contain more serious topic and theme, which may not be advisable for children to watch except under the very vigilant guidance and presence of a parent or adult.

The Board also stated in its Memorandum Circular No. 12-2011 that the new “SPG” rating aims to “balance the interest of the State to protect and promote the development and welfare of the youth with the interest of the broadcast industry to freedom of expression vis-à-vis the self-regulatory schemes undertaken by the different broadcast networks.”

In a television interview on Monday, February 20, 2012, MTRCB officials said SPG classified programs should be aired after 9 p.m. when there are already less minors watching television.
