A strong earthquake has hit Indonesia afternoon of Wednesday, April 11, 2012. The US Geological Survey (USGS) initially reported it as 8.9 magnitude but was later downgraded to 8.7.
It struck 33 kilometers under the sea off the northern Aceh province. Strong aftershocks were reported.
Reports say the Aceh, Indonesia quake triggered a tsunami watch alert across the Indian Ocean region. No tsunami warning was issued in the Philippines as the quake is too far from the country.
No reports of damage were reported in Indonesia as of this posting.
