Philippine Volcanoes beat Sri Lanka, 28-18, in Asian 5 rugby match




The Philippines Volcanoes beat top seeded Sri Lanka, 28-18, in the final match of Asian 5 Division I tournament in front of delighted countrymen.

The win by Philippine rugby team gives them an entry into the Asian Top 5, the tournament that will send at least one Asian nation to the 2015 Rugby World Cup in London, England.

The Volcanoes dominated the first half with Oli Sanders penalty kicks and team captain Michael Letts’ try and kick, 16-0. Joe Matthews put it on 23-0 with another successful attack and kick. But the Sri Lankans scored a penalty to make it 23-3 at the half.

The second half was more thrilling as the Sri Lankans battled back with a series of tries and kicks to close to gap to 23-18. But Justin Coveney sealed the win as he barreled through the defense for the final score.

The Philippine Volcanoes were the lowest ranked team of the division at 62nd. Their world ranking is expected to rise after wins over higher-ranked teams Singapore (58th), Chinese Taipei (56th) and Sri Lanka (43rd).
