Dolphy, who is confined at the Makati Medical Center due to Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), started to undergo dialysis on Thursday, June 21, 2012.
In a press conference, the Comedy King’s son Eric Quizon said the family allowed doctors to administer dialysis to support his father’s kidneys.
Dialysis is a process for removing waste and excess water from the blood. It is used primarily to provide an artificial replacement for lost kidney function in people with renal failure.
The actor-director said his father was able to open his eyes, but only for a short period. “I knew he was trying to communicate with us,” Eric told reporters.
COPD, MedicineNet says, is comprised primarily of three related conditions—chronic bronchitis, chronic asthma, and emphysema—and in each condition there is chronic obstruction of the flow of air through the airways and out of the lungs, and the obstruction generally is permanent and may be progressive over time.
