Dolphy, the King of Comedy, in a radio interview on Monday, April 23, 2012, revealed his aspiration to become a National Artist.

Speaking over DZMM, Dolphy reportedly said:

“Well actually ‘yung ibang (recognitions) hindi naman kailangan pero ang National Artist medyo iba ito. Kung baga ultimate ‘yan kaya siyempre kung mabibigay sa akin eh di maganda. Kung hindi naman, okay lang.”

In 2009 during the administration of former president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, the King of Comedy made it in two rounds of screening but failed to be included in the final list of recommendees.

In 2010, President Benigno Aquino III conferred him the Grand Collar of the Order of the Golden Heart, the highest award given to a private citizen by the president of the republic, for his laudable charitable work and contribution to the country’s entertainment industry.

Meanwhile, actor-politician Senator Jinggoy Estrada last week said Dolphy should be recognized as a National Artist. He added that the latter is among some Filipino actors who deserve the title namely Fernando Poe Jr., Nora Aunor, Vilma Santos and his father, former president Joseph Estrada.

Vilma, on the other hand, reportedly supports the idea of Dolphy being recognized as a National Artist.

Does the Comedy King deserve such title? Your thoughts?
