Is August 20, 2012 a holiday in the Philippines? Relying on Proclamation No. 295, August 20 (Monday) is a holiday. But a very big NOTE to take is that August 20 was just a tentative date for Eid-al-Fitr 2012.
According to Republic Act 9177, which was approved on November 13, 2002, "the first day of Shawwal, the tenth month of the Islamic calendar, is hereby declared a national holiday for the observance of Eidul Fitr." Section 26, Chapter 7 of Executive Order No. 292, otherwise known as the Revised Administrative Code of 1987, declared the date of observance of Eidul Fitr as a movable date.
Reports confirmed earlier last week that the Islamic holy month of fasting has begun Friday, July 20, 2012 and will end on Saturday, August 18. This means that the Eid’l Fitr this year falls on the latter date and not on August 20, 2012.
As of this posting, no formal proclamation yet about the end of Ramadan. But using the fact above, August 18 should be declared the observance of Eid’l Fitr.
What's your thought about this issue? Should President Noynoy Aquino declare August 20 as a holiday and take your very long weekend?
